Reared in Brooklyn, New York, Lyte is keeping her finger on hip-hop’s pulse while also seriously pursuing an acting career.
MC Lyte is currently starring on UPN’s primetime hit sitcom “Half & Half” as “Ky” the record company President. Last year, she also served as a recurring celebrity judge on CBS’s STAR SEARCH with Arsenio Hall.
Lyte was also a familiar face on television with her recurring character “Lana” on the WB’s long running comedy, “For Your Love”. Lyte can also dish up the drama as evidenced in her roles on the crime dramas, CBS’ “The District” and FOX’S “ New YorkUndercover” and “Get Real” series. Lyte’s television credits also include UPN’s “Platinum”, “In The House” and “Moesha”, Nickelodeon’s “Cousin Skeeter “and MTV’s “DNC”.
In the world of film, thus far Lyte wrapped filming on “Playa’s Ball” which tells the story of the NBA’s newest rookie whose life is turned upside by a paternity suit and rape charge. Lyte also shows what’s really going down in an all female prisons in the Trimark/Lions Gate’s feature release entitled, Civil Brand.
Lyte also landed roles in feature films including Extreme Pictures’ Train Ride, Cinergi
Pictures’ Burn Hollywood Burn, Warner Brother’s Fly By Night; and the independent features, Luv Tails and Short Handed.
With her signature style and recognizable voice it only makes sense that Lyte would be tapped for national voiceover campaigns. Lyte has been the voice behind the VH1 Hip Hop Honors, Wherehouse Music, Coca-Cola, McDonald’s and Nike national campaigns. Lyte has also represented Mattel, in the same capacity, by giving her voice to the overwhelmingly popular Mattel Diva Stars “Chat doll”—Tia. Lyte can also be heard hosting her own weekend radio show on Sirius Satellite Radio.
MC LYTE is a legendary, established rap artist! MC LYTE is the first rap artist ever to perform at Carnegie Hall and the first female rapper to ever receive a gold single. MC LYTE’s inspiring 1993 anthem, the classic “Ruffneck”, was nominated for a Grammy for Best Rap Single (The first female solo rapper ever nominated for a Grammy!). Her latest album “Undaground Heat vol.1, Hosted by Jamie Foxx”, (2003) garnered this rap legend her 2 nd career Grammy nomination; 10 years later, on her own label SGI/CMM, the same single “Ride Wit Me” also received a BET award nomination for Best Female rap performance.
It’s been an incredible ride for MC LYTE! To date, MCLYTE has released eight albums as well as co-written and performed the television theme songs for Fox’s “Dark Angel” and BET’s “Holla”. Lyte shows no signs of slowing down on the music, film or television scene. Lyte is also very active in many social projects, involving herself in anti-violence campaigns, Rock the Vote, and contributing her time and expertise to several non-profit organizations.
